Sealite Helps Protect the Delicate Coral Gardens of the Maldives
Consideration for the environment and reliability were the deciding factors for the choice of Sealite products to be used to mark the channel entrance to the Shangri-la Villingili Resort and Spa.
The Shangri-la Villingili Resort and Spa opened in July and is the first luxury resort to be opened on the Maldives featuring private ocean retreats and tropical tree house villas. The Maldives is located south-west of Sri Lanka on the equator with over one thousand coral islands forming an archipelago of 26 major atolls. Dazzling, underwater coral gardens, white sandy beaches and lush vegetation make this an ideal tropical holiday destination.
Protecting this delicate ecosystem was an important consideration for the resort owners when marking the channel entrance to this island resort. Previously a concert had been used as the foundation for an iron tube onto which lights were mounted. This has destroyed a large amount of the delicate coral reefs. To help protect the reef and minimise damage, a combination of SLB700, SLB610 and Aquafloat 600 buoys fitted with SL60 and SL15 lanterns are now been used to mark the channel, and because there is now no need for a large concert to be used there will be minimal impact on the environment.
A custom made graphic of the Shangri-la logo has been added to the buoys helping to reinforce the Shangri-la brand.
Due to environmental factors and their reliability Sealite products are very common in the Maldives with over 80% of the resorts choosing Sealite.
