Shell Singapore operates a refinery plant in Pulau Bukom, an island that is about 5km south of the Singapore Mainland. To aid vessels entering the refinery, they had cited a port entry light (PEL) on a nearby island. Troubled by the procurement of replacement lamps as well as the ageing of the hardware, Shell has to invest a lot of time and effort to ensure that the PEL was continually in working condition.
With the introduction of the Sealite 5 degree sectored LED port entry light into the aids to navigation market, Shell expressed interest in replacing the old PEL due to its small size and power efficiencies. With class-leading LED technologies, the Sealite PEL does not require focusing or re-lamping while in service, there are no moving parts and is a low powered option providing over 500,000cd at 30watts. Shell chose Sealite’s PEL to replace their existing light due to the huge cost saving potential the company would receive, therefore eliminating the need for the inventory of incandescent light bulbs. In addition, Shell now doesn’t have to schedule manpower to perform the replacement and corrective maintenance, saving much-needed maintenance costs.
The Sealite 5 degree PEL consists of ten LEDs to create ten precise sectors, with each sector giving an accuracy of 0.5 degrees (horizontal). Coupled with the optional GSM Remote Monitoring and Control, Shell is able to get a daily status of the PEL-05 automatically on their mobile devices via the SMS feature. Shell is also able to view and control the operation of the lantern, giving 24 x 7 live updates to the operators without having to leave the comfort of their office or home. The added benefit of historical data (30 days) showing the status of the PEL was extremely helpful in planning any preventive maintenance work on the PEL system. In conclusion, Shell now has a reliable light that will only need to be checked once a year as part of their standard maintenance regime.
